The rapid and effective implementation of PrEP has been hindered by the pandemic, resource limitations, and an uneven level of knowledge, both in the field of HIV and STIs, as well as in providing care to the key populations it targets. In November 2019, Spain approved the use of PrEP for HIV prevention, incorporating it into the National Health System for at-risk groups. By September 2021, PrEP had been implemented in 17 Autonomous Communities, with Catalonia leading.

Disparities exist across Europe in PrEP implementation, and awareness gaps persist among non-HIV care professionals. Addressing chemsex remains a challenge and unfulfilled responsibility for physicians and nurses.

This activity’s main goal is to update HIV and STI prevention knowledge, with a focus on PrEP and strategies to maximize its impact on the number of beneficiaries in the PrEP program.
